Anti-bullying programme scoops award

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Youth North West’s Exceeding Expectations programme has won the Anti-Bullying Award at the Children & Young People Now 2009 Awards.

LGBT Youth North West, a regional organisation supporting LGBT young people, recruited 35 young people from across the region to deliver workshops in Manchester secondary schools.

The aim was to challenge other young people’s opinions on LGBT people and address homophobic bullying.

To combat the risk of the young people involved being bullied during the workshops, LGBT Youth North West provides intensive training in peer education skills as well as support afterwards.

The panel of young judges, who worked with adult judges to decide the award, said they admired the Exceeding Expectations programme because "young people are involved as they are trained and actually deliver the workshops.”

The involvement of young people in combating homophobic bullying stood out for the judges.

Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, said: "We are lucky as a society to have such a talented group of people working to improve the lives of our children and, as these awards make clear, the value they bring to our society is priceless.”

WHAT YOU THINK OF US

I just happened to come across your site and it looks great. I am a make-up artist based in Cornwall and I have done a few lesbian weddings over the past couple of years and what surprises me is that they phone up and are worried that I may take offence that they are gay. It must be horrible to feel in that position so to have a magazine featuring people who are happy to make their day special is such a fantastic idea.

Just a quick email to thank you for my copy of the new magazine and to say how pleased I am to be part of it – I’m really impressed!  I love the tone of the editorial which has managed  to be informative without being patronising – a rarity in the world of wedding journalism, I find! Wishing you every success with the South West edition of Tickled Pink.
