Bristol takes pride in 2011

Bristol Pride

Organisers of Pride Bristol have recently announced the event’s return to the city in July 2011 following its huge success in 2010.

Bursting onto the UK festival circuit in 2010, Pride Bristol hijacked the city for 10 days of colour and culture.

The award-winning event took the South West by storm and put Bristol firmly on the global Pride map.

Pride Bristol 2010 welcomed crowds of 25,000 and finished top of the city’s many festivals in Venue Magazine’s end of year awards.

Key to the event’s success is its unique balance of culture and celebration.

Pride Bristol comprises Pride Week, a high quality cultural festival featuring music, comedy, books, a film festival, theatre and sport, and Pride Day a huge outdoors festival in the heart of the city.

With the themes of equality and diversity, Pride events are staged by the vibrant lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (‘LGBT’) population.

Distinctively, Pride Bristol is an inclusive family-friendly event, and the organisers encourage everyone that values equality and diversity to join the positive celebrations.

With around 60,000 ‘LGBT’ people living and working in the city, Bristol is one of the largest urban 'LGBT' populations in the UK.

Pride Bristol blends this dynamic community element with high-profile cultural events and international performers.

Highlights of the sold-out 2010 included events afloat in the harbour, film premieres, acrobatics, a huge parade and a night sky alight with after-parties.

The week featured high quality performers including Rhona Cameron, Paul Burston, Le Gateaux Chocolat, Stella Duffy, and Sonique.

Dr Anna Rutherford, Director of Pride Bristol, said: "As the largest Pride event in the South West, Pride Bristol 2011 promises to be bigger and better to follow on from the success of last year.

"Pride Week will see events hosted at the most prestigious venues in the city in the lead up to the main Pride Day festival taking place in Castle Park on Saturday 16th July.

"Last year’s Pride Day attracted over 20,000 people and we’re expecting to see increased numbers in 2011.”

Destination Bristol, the destination marketing organisation for Bristol and South Gloucestershire, looks forward to welcoming LGBT visitors to the city with special accommodation and travel offers as the event draws nearer.

In 2011, Pride Bristol will take place between Saturday 9th – Sunday 17th July.

The event will again welcome a choice of cultural events throughout the week with the main Pride Festival highlight being held on Saturday 16th July.

WHAT YOU THINK OF US

I just happened to come across your site and it looks great. I am a make-up artist based in Cornwall and I have done a few lesbian weddings over the past couple of years and what surprises me is that they phone up and are worried that I may take offence that they are gay. It must be horrible to feel in that position so to have a magazine featuring people who are happy to make their day special is such a fantastic idea.

Just a quick email to thank you for my copy of the new magazine and to say how pleased I am to be part of it – I’m really impressed!  I love the tone of the editorial which has managed  to be informative without being patronising – a rarity in the world of wedding journalism, I find! Wishing you every success with the South West edition of Tickled Pink.
